How to Time Contractions

Timing contractions helps you and your midwife understand how labor is progressing. The three numbers that matter are duration (how long each contraction lasts), interval (time from the start of one to the start of the next), and frequency (how many per hour).

1
Tap START when a contraction begins

The timer starts counting the moment you feel the contraction.

2
Tap STOP when it ends

Duration is saved automatically. Optionally rate the intensity from 1 to 5.

3
Watch your interval update in real time

The app calculates the interval between contractions and highlights it in green, amber or red as labor progresses.

The 5-1-1 Rule – When to Go to the Hospital

Most midwives and OBs recommend calling or heading in when contractions follow this pattern:

5 minutes apart — interval between contractions
1 minute long — duration of each contraction
For at least 1 hour

TimeItBaby shows a banner alert when the 5-1-1 pattern is detected, and an urgent alert if contractions reach 3 minutes apart. Always follow your own provider's guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

About contractions, the 5-1-1 rule, and the app.

The 5-1-1 rule is a guideline used by many midwives and obstetricians: call or go to the hospital when contractions are every 5 minutes apart, last at least 1 minute each, and have followed that pattern for at least 1 hour. TimeItBaby tracks all three numbers and shows a clear banner alert when the rule is met. Always follow your own healthcare provider's specific instructions — some recommend 4-1-1 for first-time mothers.

Tap START the moment you feel a contraction begin, then tap STOP as soon as it ends. The app records the duration. The interval — the time from the start of one contraction to the start of the next — is calculated automatically when you begin the next contraction. The interval is the key number for the 5-1-1 rule.

Always follow your healthcare provider's personal advice first. As a general guideline, contact your midwife or hospital when contractions follow the 5-1-1 pattern.

Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions) are irregular, usually painless tightenings that do not follow a consistent pattern and do not get longer, stronger or closer together over time. True labor contractions become progressively more regular, longer and more frequent. If you are unsure, timing your contractions with TimeItBaby will quickly reveal whether they are becoming more regular — which is the clearest sign of active labor.
